1 23 Shades of Black (A Filomena Buscarsela Mystery)
Wishnia, Ken PM Press 1604865873 / 9781604865875 PAPERBACK New
1604865873 23 Shades of Black is socially conscious crime fiction. It takes place in New York City in the early 1980s, i.e., the Reagan years, and was written partly in response to the reactionary discourse of the time, when the current thirty-year assault on the rights of working people began in earnest, and the divide between rich and poor deepened with the blessing of the political and corporate elites. But it is not a political tract, it?s a kick-ass novel that was nominated for the Edgar and the Anthony Awards, and made Booklist?s Best First Mysteries of the Year. The heroine, Filomena Buscarsela, is an immigrant who experienced tremendous poverty and injustice in her native Ecuador, and who grew up determined to devote her life to helping others. She tells us that she really should have been a priest, but since that avenue was closed to her, she chose to become a cop instead. The problem is that as one of the first Latinas on the NYPD, she is not just a woman in a man?s world, she is a woman of color in a white man?s world. And it?s hell. Filomena is mistreated and betrayed by her fellow officers, which leads her to pursue a case independently in the hopes of being promoted to detective for the Rape Crisis Unit. Along the way, she is required to enforce unjust drug laws that she disagrees with, and to betray her own community (which ostracizes her as a result) in an undercover operation to round up illegal immigrants. Several scenes are set in the East Village art and punk rock scene of the time, and the murder case eventually turns into an investigation of corporate environmental crime from a working class perspective that is all-too-rare in the genre. And yet this thing is damn funny, too.

3 A Moment of Doubt (Green Arcade)
Nisbet, Jim PM Press 1604863072 / 9781604863079 PAPERBACK New
1604863072 A Moment of Doubt is at turns hilarious, thrilling and obscene. Jim Nisbet?s novella is ripped from the zeitgeist of the 80s, and set in a sex-drenched San Francisco, where the computer becomes the protagonist?s co-conspirator and both writer and machine seem to threaten the written word itself. City as whore provides a backdrop oozing with drugs, poets and danger. Nisbet has written a mad-cap meditation on the angst of a writer caught in a world where the rent is due, new technology offers up illicit ways to produce the latest bestseller, and the detective and other characters of the imagination might just sidle up to the bar and buy you a drink in real life. world of A Moment of Doubt is the world of phone sex, bars and bordellos, AIDS and the lure of hacking. Coming up against the rules of the game--the detective genre itself, has never been such a nasty and gender defying challenge. Plus: An interview with Jim Nisbet, who is ?Still too little read in the United States, it's a joy for us that Nisbet has been recognized here.." Regards: Le Mouvement des Id?es.

0937944041 New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Radical Independent Pacific Northwest Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). 259 p. Oscar Yeager, a former combat pilot in Vietnam, now a comfortable yuppie working as a Defense Department consultant in the Virginia suburbs of the nation s capital, faces this question. He surveys the race mixing, the open homosexuality, the growing influence of drugs, the darkening complexion of the population as the tide of non-white immigration swells. He finds that for him there is really no choice at all: he is compelled to fight the evil which afflicts America in the 1990 s; his conscience will not let him ignore it and joining it is inconceivable. In Turner Diaries author Andrew MacDonald showed the outcome of what is going on in society right now. 41/2 x7, softcover 258 pp.

5 Absence of the Hero
Bukowski, Charles City Lights Publishers 0872865312 / 9780872865310 PAPERBACK New
0872865312 New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 300 p. Audience: General/trade. Everyone's favorite Dirty Old Man returns with a new volume of uncollected work. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), one of the most outrageous figures of 20th-century American literature, was so prolific that many significant pieces never found their way into his books. Absence of the Hero contains much of his earliest fiction, unseen in decades, as well as a number of previously unpublished stories and essays. classic Bukowskian obsessions are here: sex, booze, and gambling, along with trenchant analysis of what he calls "Playing and Being the Poet. " Among the book's highlights are tales of his infamous public readings ("Big Dope Reading, " "I Just Write Poetry So I Can Go to Bed with Girls"); a review of his own first book; hilarious installments of his newspaper column, Notes of a Dirty Old Man, including meditations on neo-Nazis and driving in Los Angeles; and an uncharacteristic tale of getting lost in the Utah woods ("Bukowski Takes a Trip"). Yet the book also showcases the other Bukowski--an astute if offbeat literary critic. From his own "Manifesto" to his account of poetry in Los Angeles ("A Foreword to These Poets") to idiosyncratic evaluations of Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, LeRoi Jones, and Louis Zukofsky, Absence of the Hero reveals the intellectual hidden beneath the gruff exterior. second volume of his uncollected prose, Absence of the Hero is a major addition to the Bukowski canon, essential for fans yet suitable for new readers as an introduction to the wide range of his work.

1604860197 New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Radical Independent Pacific Northwest Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 186 p. Contains: Illustrations. Switchblade. Audience: General/trade. A novel of crime, transport, and sex, I-5 tells the bleak and brutal story of Anya and her journey north from Los Angeles to Oakland on the interstate that bisects the Central Valley of California. Anya is the victim of a deep deception. Someone has lied to her; and because of this lie, she is kept under lock and key, used by her employer to service men, and indebted for the privilege. In exchange, she lives in the United States and fantasizes on a future American freedom. Or as she remarks to a friend, "Would she rather be fucking a dog..or living like a dog? " In Anya s world, it s a reasonable question. Much of I-5 transpires on the eponymous interstate. Anya travels with her manager and driver from Los Angeles to Oakland. It s a macabre journey: a drop at Denny s, a bad patch of fog, a visit to a correctional facility, a rendezvous with an organ grinder, and a dramatic entry across Oakland s city limits.

59 Labyrinths (New Directions Paperbook)

0811216993 New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Independent Pacific Northwest Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 256 p. Audience: General/trade. If Jorge Luis Borges had been a computer scientist, he probably would have invented hypertext and the World Wide Web. Instead, being a librarian and one of the world's most widely read people, he became the leading practitioner of a densely layered imaginistic writing style that has been imitated throughout this century, but has no peer (although Umberto Eco sometimes comes close, especially in Name of the Rose). Borges's stories are redolent with an intelligence, wealth of invention, and a tight, almost mathematically formal style that challenge with mysteries and paradoxes revealed only slowly after several readings. Highly recommended to anyone who wants their imagination and intellect to be aswarm with philosophical plots, compelling conundrums, and a wealth of real and imagined literary references derived from an infinitely imaginary library.

10 Between Parentheses: Essays, Articles and Speeches, 1998-2003
Bolaņo, Roberto New Directions 0811218147 / 9780811218146 Hardcover New
0811218147 Between Parentheses?collects most of the newspaper columns and articles Bola?o wrote during the last five years of his life, as well as the texts of some of his speeches and talks and a few scattered prologues. ?Taken together,? as the editor Ignacio Echevarr?a remarks in his introduction, they provide ?a personal cartography of the writer: the closest thing, among all his writings, to a kind of fragmented ?autobiography.?? Bola?o?s career as a nonfiction writer began in 1998, the year he became famous overnight for?The Savage Detectives; he was suddenly in demand for articles and speeches, and he took to this new vocation like a duck to water. Cantankerous, irreverent, and insufferably opinionated, Bola?o also could be tender (about his family and favorite places) as well as a fierce advocate for his heroes (Borges, Cort?zar, Parra) and his favorite contemporaries, whose books he read assiduously and promoted generously. A demanding critic, he declares that in his ?ideal literary kitchen there lives a warrior?: he argues for courage, and especially for bravery in the face of failure.?Between Parentheses?fully lives up to his own demands: ?I ask for creativity from literary criticism, creativity at all levels.

12 Big Sur
Kerouac, Jack Harper Perennial 0007880294 / 9780007880294 PAPERBACK New
0007880294 ~NEW. No DJ, as issued. Trade Paperback. Brand new; satisfaction guaranteed. Big Sur is a 1962 novel by Jack Kerouac. It recounts the events surrounding Kerouac's (here known by the name of his fictional alter-ego Jack Duluoz) three brief sojourns to a cabin in Bixby Canyon, Big Sur, owned by Kerouac's friend and Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The novel departs from Kerouac's previous fictionalized autobiographical series in that the character Duluoz is shown as a popular, published author; Kerouac's previous novels are restricted to depicting Kerouac's days as a bohemian traveller. The novel depicts Duluoz's mental and physical deterioration. Duluoz is unable to cope with a suddenly demanding public, and is battling with advanced alcoholism. He seeks respite first in solitude in the Big Sur cabin, then in a relationship with Billie, the mistress of his longtime friend Cody Pomeray (Neal Cassady). Duluoz finds respite in the Big Sur wilderness, but is driven by loneliness to return to the city, and resumes drinking heavily. Across Duluoz's subsequent trips to Big Sur and interleaved lifestyle in San Francisco, he drunkenly embarrasses Cody by introducing Billie to Cody's wife, cannot emotionally provide for the increasingly demanding Billie, and finds himself increasingly unable to integrate into suburban life. Duluoz's inner turmoil culminates in his nervous breakdown during his third journey to Big Sur. An addendum to the book contains Kerouac's poem "Sea: Sounds of the Pacific Ocean at Big Sur".

At the heart of a city, a river is dying, children have cancer, and people are burning with despair. From the safe distance that wealth buys, a corporation called Vexcorp counts these lives as another expense on a balance sheet. But that distance is about to collapse. Malia is an activist who has fiercely fought the everyday atrocities of environmental racism. After years of watching countless children die, she s lost faith in the possibility of systemic reform. Dennis is a lawyer who still believes that if enough people have the correct information they will do the right thing. Dujuan is a young street thug torn by a chaos of grief and rage at his little sister s death. And Larry Gordon is Vexcorp s CEO. Their lives converge when Dujuan mugs Malia. Her scornful comparison of Dujuan to Vexcorp triggers a storm inside him. That storm only clears when he identifies the real agent of his pain: Larry Gordon. Injury requires justice, so Dujuan kidnaps Gordon and assembles a rough court to try him for murder. He picks Malia to be the judge because she knows the facts and because, as Dujuan says, You want this as bad as me. As bystanders become involved and time runs out, Malia is forced to make grueling moral decisions between survival and loyalty, safety and courage, agency and despair. Derrick Jensen has written a novel as compelling as it is necessary: with our planet under serious threat, Malia s decisions face us all.

This book is, in truth, a masterpiece; so intense is the impression that one almost asks, Is this a novel or confession? Did not Frank Harris perhaps throw the bomb? At least he has thrown one now the best novel I have ever read. Aleister Crowley, occultist Over 100 years ago the infamous Haymarket affair in Chicago pierced the world with news of what would now be characterized as terrorist violence. In the Haymarket incident, a bomb killed police gathered to club and maul labor protesters. And although the police could not find the man who threw the bomb, labor and anarchist leaders were found guilty in a notoriously ugly trial, and several were actually hanged. Frank Harris novel comes from the point-of-view of the uncaught bomb-thrower, a German immigrant in love with the extreme political tactics of the notorious anarchist Louis Lingg. Feral House edition of Bomb contains an afterword by anarchist thinker John Zerzan, and an anti-anarchist introduction by novelist John Dos Passos.

16 Breakfast of Champions: A Novel

Audience: General/trade. We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane. So reads the tombstone of downtrodden writer Kilgore Trout, but we have no doubt who's really talking: his alter ego Kurt Vonnegut. Health versus sickness, humanity versus inhumanity--both sets of ideas bounce through this challenging and funny book. As with the rest of Vonnegut's pure fantasy, it lacks the shimmering, fact-fueled rage that illuminates Slaughterhouse-Five. At the same time, that makes this book perhaps more enjoyable to read. Breakfast of Champions is a slippery, lucid, bleakly humorous jaunt through (sick? inhumane? ) America circa 1973, with Vonnegut acting as our Virgil-like companion. book follows its main character, auto-dealing solid-citizen Dwayne Hoover, down into madness, a condition brought on by the work of the aforementioned Kilgore Trout. As Dwayne cracks, then crumbles, Breakfast of Champions coolly shows the effects his dementia has on the web of characters surrounding him. It's not much of a plot, but it's enough for Vonnegut to air unique opinions on America, sex, war, love, and all of his other pet topics--you know, the only ones that really count.

18 Byzantium Endures: The First Volume of the Colonel Pyat Quartet
Moorcock, Michael PM Press 1604864915 / 9781604864915 PAPERBACK New
1604864915 Meet Maxim Arturovitch Pyatnitski, also known as Pyat. Tsarist rebel, Nazi thug, continental conman, and reactionary counterspy: the dark and dangerous anti-hero of Michael Moorcock's most controversial work. Published in 1981 to great critical acclaim?then condemned to the shadows and unavailable in the U.S. for thirty years?Byzantium Endures, the first of the Pyat Quartet, is not a book for the faint-hearted. It's the story of a cocaine addict, sexual adventurer, and obsessive anti-Semite whose epic journey from Leningrad to London connects him with scoundrels and heroes from Trotsky to Makhno, and whose career echoes that of the 20th century's descent into Fascism and total war. This is Moorcock at his audacious, iconoclastic best: a grand sweeping overview of the events of the last century, as revealed in the secret journals of modern literature's most proudly unredeemable outlaw. This authoritative U.S. edition presents the author's final cut, restoring previously forbidden passages and deleted scenes

Audience: General/trade. euphoric idealism of grassroots reform and the tragic reality of revolutionary failure are at the center of this speculative novel that opens with a real historical event. On October 2, 1968, 10 days before the Summer Olympics in Mexico, the Mexican government responds to a student demonstration in Tlatelolco by firing into the crowd, killing more than 200 students and civilians and wounding hundreds more. massacre of Tlatelolco was erased from the official record as easily as authorities washing the blood from the streets, and no one was ever held accountable. It is two years later and Nestor, a journalist and participant in the fateful events, lies recovering in the hospital from a knife wound. His fevered imagination leads him in the collection of facts and memories of the movement and its assassination in the company of figures from his childhood. Nestor calls on the heroes of his youth--Sherlock Holmes, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and D'Artagnan among them--to join him in launching a new reform movement conceived by his intensely active imagination.

Doctorow, Cory Tor Books 0765312816 / 9780765312815 PAPERBACK New
0765312816 In this tour de force, Doctorow (Little Brother) uses the contradictions of two overused SF themes?the decline and fall of America and the boundless optimism of open source/hacker culture?to draw one of the most brilliant reimaginings of the near future since cyberpunk wore out its mirror shades. Perry Gibbons and Lester Banks, typical brilliant geeks in a garage, are trash-hackers who find inspiration in the growing pile of technical junk. Attracting the attention of suits and smart reporter Suzanne Church, the duo soon get involved with cheap and easy 3D printing, a cure for obesity and crowd-sourced theme parks. The result is bitingly realistic and miraculously avoids clich? or predictability. While dates and details occasionally contradict one another, Doctorow's combination of business strategy, brilliant product ideas and laugh-out-loud moments of insight will keep readers powering through this quick-moving tale.?

1604860758 New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 145 p. Outspoken Authors, 4. Audience: General/trade. When President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the West, he told them to look especially for mammoths. Jefferson had seen bones and tusks of the great beasts in Virginia, and he suspected--he hoped! --that they might still roam the Great Plains. In Eleanor Arnason s imaginative alternate history, they do: shaggy herds thunder over the grasslands, living symbols of the oncoming struggle between the Native peoples and the European invaders. And in an unforgettable saga that soars from the badlands of the Dakotas to the icy wastes of Siberia, from the Russian Revolution to the AIM protests of the 1960s, Arnason tells of a modern woman s struggle to use the weapons of DNA science to fulfill the ancient promises of her Lakota heritage. PLUS: Writing SF During World War III, and an Outspoken Interview that takes you straight into the heart and mind of one of today s edgiest and most uncompromising speculative authors.

71 Modem Times 2.0 (Outspoken Authors)
Moorcock, Michael PM Press 1604863080 / 9781604863086 PAPERBACK New
1604863080 As the editor of London?s revolutionary New Worlds magazine in the swinging sixties, Michael Moorcock has been credited with virtually inventing modern Science Fiction: publishing such figures as Norman Spinrad, Samuel R. Delany, Brian Aldiss and J.G. Ballard. Moorcock?s own literary accomplishments include his classic Mother London, a romp through urban history conducted by psychic outsiders; his comic Pyat quartet, in which a Jewish antisemite examines the roots of the Nazi Holocaust; Behold Man, the tale of a time tourist who fills in for Christ on the cross; and of course the eternal hero Elric, swordswinger, hellbringer and bestseller. And now Moorcock?s most audacious creation, Jerry Cornelius--assassin, rock star, chronospy and maybe-Messiah--is back in Modem Times 2.0, a time twisting odyssey that connects 60s London with post-Obama America, with stops in Palm Springs and Guantanamo. Modem Times 2.0 is Moorcock at his most outrageously readable--a masterful mix of erudition and subversion. Plus: a non-fiction romp in the spirit of Swift and Orwell, Fields of Folly; and an Outspoken Interview with literature?s authentic Lord of Misrule.

24 Dance the Eagle to Sleep: A Novel
Piercy, Marge PM Press 1604864567 / 9781604864564 PAPERBACK New
1604864567 Originally published in 1970, Marge Piercy?s second novel follows the lives of four teenagers, in a near future society, as they rebel against a military draft and ?the system.? The occupation of Franklin High School begins, and with it, the open rebellion of America?s youth against their channeled, unrewarding lives and the self-serving, plastic society that directs them. From the disillusionment and alienation of the young at the center of the revolt, to their attempts to build a visionary new society, the nationwide following they gain and the brutally complete repression that inevitably follows, this is a future fiction without a drop of fantasy. As driving, violent, and nuanced today as it was 40 years ago, this anniversary edition includes a new introduction by the author reflecting unapologetically on the novel and the times from which it emerged.

Among them is an American submarine captain struggling to resist the knowledge that his wife and children in the United States must be dead. Then a faint Morse code signal is picked up, transmitting from somewhere near Seattle, and Captain Towers must lead his submarine crew on a bleak tour of the ruined world in a desperate search for signs of life. 26 Down and Out in the Ivy League
Eccarius, J. G. III Pub 1886625042 / 9781886625044 PAPERBACK New
1886625042 Just as William Faulkner was miserable in college (he was called "Count-no-Count" because of his shabby clothes) so was J.G. Eccarius's protagonist Jay, who is portrayed as going hungry and being penniless while attending Brown University. No wonder his stories and novels often have an "eat the rich" theme. In the sections about Jay's childhood we see a fellow altar-boy first molested and then murdered by a priest. But the humor here is not always dark: there is also a story about helping out two children in trouble and one about Christian fanatics who spend all their time destroying fossils so no one will be deluded into believing in Evolution. The book ends with a flashback to Roman times where a Jewish peasant has visions of the future where he will be the Charles Manson, and therefore starts prophesying and believing he is the Son of God. This book is not to be missed if you have a sense of humor about religion, politics, or life.

A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies. Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future..and our end.

He now lives with his wife and two children in Colorado, where he spends most of his time trolling local histories and haunting the bookshops, blues bars, and firing ranges of ungentrified Denver. He has published fiction and non-fiction in a number of magazines, anthologies, and essay collections. Pike is his first novel.Reviews:?Without so much as a sideways glance towards gentility, Pike is one righteous mutherfucker of a read. I move that we put Whitmer?s balls in a vise and keep slowly notching up the torque until he?s willing to divulge the secret of how he managed to hit such a perfect stride his first time out of the blocks.?--Ward Churchill"Benjamin Whitmer?s Pike captures the grime and the rage of my not-so fair city with disturbing precision. words don?t just tell a story here, they scream, bleed, and burst into flames. Pike, like its eponymous main character, is a vicious punisher that doesn?t mince words or take prisoners, and no one walks away unscathed. This one?s going to haunt me for quite some time."--Nathan Singer "This is what noir is, what it can be when it stops playing nice--blunt force drama stripped down to the bone, then made to dance across the page."--Stephen Graham Jones.

0553348477 New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Radical Independent Pacific Northwest Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 192 p. Audience: General/trade. Ecotopia: Notebooks and Reports of William Weston is the title of a seminal novel by Ernest Callenbach, published in 1975. society described in the book is one of the first ecological utopias and was influential on the counterculture, and the green movement in the 1970s and thereafter. impressive, environmentally benign energy, homebuilding, and transportation technology described by Callenbach in Ecotopia was based on research findings published in such journals as Scientific American. author's story was woven using the fiber of technologies, lifestyles, folkways, and attitudes that were being reflected (from real-life experience) in the pages of, for example, the Whole Earth Catalog and its successor CoEvolution Quarterly, as well as being depicted in newspaper stories, novels and films. Callenbach's main ideas for Ecotopian values and practices were based on actual experimentation taking place in the American West. To draw an example, Callenbach's fictional Crick School was based upon Pinel School, an alternative school located outside Martinez, California, and attended for a time by his son. author s Ecotopian concept does not reject high technology, but members of his fictional society prefer to demonstrate a conscious selectivity of technology, so that not only human health and sanity might be preserved, but also social and ecological well being. Interestingly therefore, Callenbach s story anticipated the development and liberal usage of videoconferencing. During the 1970s when Ecotopia was written and published many prominent counterculture and new left thinkers decried the consumption and overabundance that they perceived as characteristic of post-World War Two America[1]. citizens of Ecotopia shared a common aim: they were looking for a balance between themselves and nature. They were literally sick of bad air, chemicalized food, and lunatic advertising. They turned to politics because it was finally the only route to self-preservati.

36 Factotum
Bukowski, Charles Ecco 0876852630 / 9780876852637 PAPERBACK New
0876852630 One of Charles Bukowski's best, this beer-soaked, deliciously degenerate novel follows the wanderings of aspiring writer Henry Chinaski across World War II-era America. Deferred from military service, Chinaski travels from city to city, moving listlessly from one odd job to another, always needing money but never badly enough to keep a job. His day-to-day existence spirals into an endless litany of pathetic whores, sordid rooms, dreary embraces, and drunken brawls, as he makes his bitter, brilliant way from one drink to the next. Charles Bukowski's posthumous legend continues to grow. Factotum is a masterfully vivid evocation of slow-paced, low-life urbanity and alcoholism, and an excellent introduction to the fictional world of Charles Bukowski.

Well, perhaps one or two traces were left... With different personal and consumption habits, Julia has slipped out of the world she knew and into the Simulacrum?a place between the cracks of our existence from which human history is both guided and thwarted by the conflict between a species of anarchist wasp and a collective of hyperintelligent spider. In his outrageous new Surfing the Gnarl, Dr. Rucker infiltrates fundamentalist Virginia to witness the apocalyptic clash between Bible-thumpers and Saucer Demons at a country club barbecue; undresses in orbit to explore the future of foreplay in freefall (?Rapture in Space?); and (best of all!) dons the robe of a Transreal Lifestyle Adviser with How-to Tips on how you can manipulate the Fourth Dimension to master everyday tasks like finding an apartment, dispatching a tiresome lover, organizing closets and iPods, and remaking Reality. Lovecraft is one of America's giants of the horror genre. Now, in this second volume of annotated tales, Lovecraft scholars S. T. Joshi and Peter Cannon provide another rare opportunity to look into the mind of a genius. Their extensive notes lift the veil between real events in the writer's life such as the death of his father and the words that spill out onto the page in magnificent grotesquerie. Mansions, universities, laboratories, and dank New England boneyards appear also as the haunts where Lovecraft's characters confront the fabulous and fantastic, or like the narrator in "Herbert West Reanimator" dig up fresh corpses. Richly illustrated and scrupulously researched, this extraordinary work adds exciting levels of meaning to Lovecraft's chilling tales..and increases our wonder at the magic that transforms life into a great writer's art.
