51 Christopher Columbus and His Expedition to America by Gerlach, J.
Gerlach, J. Microcosm Publishing New
~NEW. No DJ, as issued. Pamphlet. Brand new; satisfaction guaranteed. While past histories depict Christopher Columbus as either god-sent angel or bloodthirsty demon,?Simple History Series?author J. Gerlach opts to let the events stand on their own, allowing readers to draw up their own conclusions. The result in Gerlach's heavy illustrated?Christopher Columbus and His Expeditions to America?is a fair and objective portrait of the oft-maligned man. As says Gerlach, "Columbus' importance is debatable. His drive and courage put him in position to 'discover' America, but his greatness depends on your definition of the word 'great.'" The story presented here is one of wholesale murder, wild ambition, and supersized gold lust. It's a dark piece of our history made even darker with facts generally left out of textbooks. But, as always,?Simple History?allows us to think for ourselves. In this age of heavily biased "news" media and propaganda-as-documentary, this brand of objective history-telling is refreshing and much needed.

2 20 Theses on the Subversion of the Metropolis by Translated from the Italian by Plan B Bureau by Translated from the Italian by Plan B Bureau by Translated from the Italian by Plan B Bureau
Translated from the Italian by Plan B Bureau Institute for Experimental Freedom Plan B Bureau New
New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Radical Independent Pacific Northwest Booksellers! 20 p. stapled, photocopied pamphlet/zine Translator's notes: Translating these 20 theses presents difficulties not only linguistically, where there are many neologisms and lexical challenges, but above culturally mediating from a continental European political context into a distant anglophone reality. Here, and in the footnotes, are a few indications for better understanding this text. In general, the relatively short nature of each thesis and the provocative, almost prophetic tone in which they are written lends itself to thoughtful interpretation, similar to reading the combination of a declaration of war and Buddhist meditation haikus. This should not in any way be understood as a definitive political doctrine. Placing this document in the current political context, it is intended to interact with the reader in such a way as to encourage discussion and debate. Where possible, the original terminology has been maintained, even to the extent of creating neologisms, as well as adding a few short notes to aid in it's comprehension. Likewise, we have also included a handful citations for some of the more continentally specific events that an anglophone reader might not be aware of. There are a few terms and concepts that run throughout the entire piece but that are never fully explained. Again, this is probably due to a different assumption of the (European) reader's prior knowledge. First and foremost are the numerous references to an Empire and the subsequent lexicon are strongly connected to Michael Hardt and Antoni Negri's work of the same title, Empire. It is strongly suggested further reading. Another important concept, one that is continually developed throughout the text, is that of the Common, which can be understood as a re-proposal of the English 16th century Commons: communal land worked and maintained protecting it from privatization. Historically, commons were eventually expropriated from the peasant population by the state. Today this idea is gaining ground in European circles as a possible f.

6 Abolish Restaurants: A Worker's Critique of the Food Service Industry (PM Pamphlet)
Prole PM Press 1604860480 / 9781604860481 PAMPHLET New
1604860480 New. No dust jacket as issued. stapled pamphlet, Support Radical Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! 56 p. stapled pamphlet A 60-page illustrated guide to the daily misery, stress, boredom, and alienation of restaurant work, as well as the ways in which restaurant workers fight against it. Drawing on a range of anti-capitalist ideas as well as a heaping plate of personal experience, it is part analysis and part call-to-arms. About Prole: "Prole" is short for "proletarian" a word used by Karl Marx to describe the working class under capitalism. We are all the people in this society who do not own property or a business we can make money from, and therefore have to sell our time and energy to a boss--we are forced to work. Our work is the basis of this society.

56 COINTELPRO: Danger We Face
Last Word Press New
Reprinted by Last Word Press, originally by the Insurgency Culture Collective; 24 page staple-bound pamphlet/zine. A history of the FBI's controversial (and illegal) program that set out to literally ?divide & conquer? the anti-war movement of the 60s and 70s. As they always say: ?Those who do not learn from the past...? From the rear cover: "first section of this pamphlet gives a brief overview of what we know the FBI did in the 60s. It explains why we can expect similar government intervention in the 90s and beyond, and offers general guidelines for effective response. main body of the pamphlet describes the specific methods which have previously been used to undermine domestic dissent and suggests steps we can take to limit or deflect their impact. A final chapter explores ways to mobilize public protest against this kind of repression. pamphlet's historical analysis is based on confidential internal documents prepared by the FBI and police during the 60s. It also draws on the post-60s confessions of disaffected government agents, and on the testimony of public officials before Congress and the courts. Though the information from these sources is incomplete, and much of what was done remains secret, we now know enough to draw useful lessons for future organizing. suggestions included in the pamphlet are based on the author's 20 years experience as an activist and lawyer, and on talks with long-time organizers in a broad range of movements. They are meant to provide starting points for discussion, so we can ge ready before the pressure intensifies. Most are a matter of common sense once the methodology of covert action is understood. Please take these issues seriously. Discuss the recommendations with other activists. Adapt them to the conditions you face. Point out problems and suggest other approaches. It is important that we begin now to protect our movements and ourselves.

7 Against Prisons by Baker, Catherine by Baker, Catherine
Baker, Catherine Last Word Press New
12 page stapled, photocopied zine/pamphlet. "We are living in a cynical time, when things have become simplified as far as prisons are concerned. The days when we could imagine that convicts would "become better" are over. No one dares to adopt this discourse, and even the stupidest penologists and the journalists who echo such nonsense recognize that even if the learning forced upon a few very rare prisoners gives them the means to better express their desires, how much more beneficial it would be if it was given to the same exceptional cases outside prison.

57 Cointelshow: A Patriot Act (PM Pamphlet)
Bogad, L. M. PM Press 1604861150 / 9781604861150 PAMPHLET New

White probes the redacted (blacked-out) texts of the FBI's notorious Counterintelligence Programs, searching for the words erased in the name of the Freedom of Information Act. Learn fun techniques for the infiltration of activist groups, how to earn benefits and a pension as an agent provocateur, and how to, in the words of J. Edgar Hoover, "expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit or otherwise neutralize" your neighbors! These are our tax dollars at work, folks; we might as well enjoy it. This script has been performed by writer/activist L.M. Bogad in theatres, galleries, labor halls, and community centers for the past twelve years. The pamphlet also includes a preface by Guillermo G?mez-Pe?a, and a companion essay by Bogad about the history of domestic surveillance/harassment, and a ?how to? for would-be performers of the script.

Although we had discussed the possibility of starting our own publishing company, it wasn't until many years later when we were given the means and the necessary stupidity to indulge ourselves. Having raided the piggy bank and our sock drawer, we began hunting for the finest second-hand printing presses and copiers to cobble together something resembling a print shop. Now, we are the proud owners of an A. B. Dick offset press, a Chandler & Price platen letterpress and those second-hand copiers we told you about. Armed with these tools, we're able to print just about anything you need be it business cards, pamphlets/zines, or that novel you've been working on for the last fifteen years (if it's good). It is not a political theory. It is a way of conceiving life. And life, young or old as we may be, is not something definitive: it is a stake we must play day after day. When we wake up in the morning and put our feet on the ground we must have a good reason for getting up. If we don't it makes no difference whether we are anarchists or not. 15 Anarchists on Anarchism by Biel, Joe (Editor)
Biel, Joe (Editor) Cantankerous Titles New
Here, in their own words, are the quotes of many historic figures in the global anarchist movement. Anarchism, a political philosophy which considers the state undesirable, unnecessary, and even harmful, promotes a classless, stateless society that is self-governed. Anarchists seek to diminish and eliminate reliance on authority in their quest for justice. These quotes while inspirational are often as divided as they are uniform, for what is political ideology if written in stone?

18 Anti-Civ Dictums by Clark, Sid
Clark, Sid Self-published New
This is a "fire-breathing, crazy-old-man, radical pamphlet," as Sid wrote in his note to me. Well, if that's the case then the world needs more fire-breathing, crazy old men because this was one of the more enjoyable zines I've had the pleasure of reading lately. As the title suggests, this zine is targeted at cities and their malevolent effects, "City living is forced and unnatural. It exacts a heavy mental and physical toll." Formal education is also attacked: "Education is primarily a form of social control; the more educated you are, the more controlled your are." Sid's thoughts/advice/rants also cover Friends and Family, Children, Adulthood, Science and Technology, Leftists, Strength & Healing, and a chapter titled 'Paths of Glory' explores alternatives to The System's monopoly on life paths. Some popular life-path alternatives are examined: Hippies, Punks, Jocks, Nerds, and Rednecks. There's a section of Homilies, here's a handful of these - 'The more you love the system, the sicker you are'; 'To live fully you must be active, physical, down-and-dirty'; 'Only comic fanboys believe in violent rebellion'; 'All systems are sick. A misfit is the only way to be.' Sid wraps it up with a 'Further Reading' list, split into Non-Fiction, First Person Narratives, Novels, Essays/Pamphlets, and Zines. It sure was a surprise to see Samuel Delany's Hogg included here (one of the most perverse novels ever written, even compared to such works as J.G. Ballard's Crash.) I'm going to make sure to track down the publications on this reading list. Also mustn't forget to mention the terrific cover by Dr. Al Ackerman, The Blaster. I can't recommend Anti-Civ Dictums highly enough to freethinking readers, those who value the 'eccentric crazies' dismissed by the sheeple of the world. Printed in an edition of 100 copies.

Audience: General/trade. One night while rooting through the recycling bin for magazines, I found all the confidential Ph.D. applicant files for the biology department at an Ivy League university from the years 1965-1975. Stapled to many of the yellowed documents were photographs of the prospective students. They were treasures! I tore through the folders and rescued every portrait I could find. I had to have them. Only later did I realize I had to publish them. So begins the preface to Jesse Reklaw s Applicant. A priceless time-bomb of pop culture, Reklaw serves a compelling and secret look into an impossibly lost era. book collects photos from the 1970s paired with accompanying comments from employers and professors. results are absurdist, confusing, often hilarious and disturbing. Applicant provides unique insight into outdated 1970s social attitudes and ephemera (under one girl s photo: Weakness: she is a female, and an attractive, modest one, so is bound to marry ). Much of the book s appeal however is found in what the book fails to say: the blank and despondent stares of it s subjects, the outdated fashions and hairstyles and it s understated text. Equal parts Ann Taintor and Found Magazine, Applicant is one of those books you read once and then want to show everyone. In fulfilling Jesse's dream, we've republished this as a tiny paperback book!.

79 Excited Delirium: A Protestor's Guide to "Less Lethal" Police Weaponry-Including an Introduction to Taser-Proof Jackets
New
New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Radical Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! 46 p. stapled zine/pamphlet government just loves technology. They always assume that every problem whether social, martial, economic, or ecological is just waiting for some magic device to solve it. This is a weakness of theirs. This zine is filled with a lot of scary information. phrase non-lethal is out and less-lethal is in because that s just what these weapons are: a bit less lethal than being shot with a gun. Stun guns, teargas, baton rounds..these things are scary. But everything in here can be counteracted through DIY means. Most of this crap costs the state anywhere from $25-100 a shot and can be blocked by second-hand sports gear or hardware store respirators. And the thing is, most of these weapons work primarily on fear. Chemical weapons, batons, flash-bangs..it s all just to get us to run away and to not challenge the police. This information is presented so that we may better educate ourselves about what we can expect on the streets. focus is on the United States, but of course these weapons are available throughout the world. Every government has its own style of repression: some play good cop, some play bad cop, some will let protestors get away with a lot and then just might kill or disappear some of them. In the USA, it s condescending authority: circumstance be damned, law & order are in charge. But the cops here are at least marginally accountable. They kill individuals all the time, but they re not likely to start killing protestors anytime soon; there are too many of us and they know they d never hear the end of it. Thus, an endless variety of weapons aimed to incapacitate and control..

New. No dust jacket as issued. stapled pamphlet, Support Radical Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! 32 p. stapled pamphlet When I was a very young child, my life was filled with intense pleasure and a vital energy that caused me to feel what I experienced to the full. I was the center of this marvelous, playful existence and felt no need to rely on anything but my own living experience to fulfill me. I felt intensely, I experienced intensely, my life was a festival of passion and pleasure. My disappointments and sorrows were also intense. I was born a free, wild being in the midst of a society based upon domestication. There was no way that I could escape being domesticated myself. Civilization will not tolerate what is wild in its midst. But I never forgot the intensity that life could be. I never forgot the vital energy that had surged through me. My existence since I first began to notice that this vitality was being drained away has been a warfare between the needs of civilized survival and the need to break loose and experience the full intensity of life unbound. I want to experience this vital energy again. I want to know the free-spirited wildness of my unrepressed desires realizing themselves in festive play. I want to smash down every wall that stands between me and the intense, passionate life of untamed freedom that I want. sum of these walls is everything we call civilization, everything that comes between us and the direct, participatory experience of the wild world. Around us has grown a web of domination, a web of mediation that limits our experience, defining the boundaries of acceptable production and consumption. Domesticating authority takes many forms, some of which are difficult to recognize. Government, capital and religion are some of the more obvious faces of authority. But technology, work, language with its conceptual limits, the ingrained habits of etiquette and propriety-these too are domesticating authorities which transform us from wild, playful, unruly animals into tamed, bored, unhappy producers and consumers. These things work in us insidiously, limi.

An anarchist critique, originally published in France in the mid-90s, of the EZLN and commercial indigenism. "EZLN is double-dealing the young lumpen-proletarians who make up its base. It provides them with a collective identity at a time of intense social destructuring, but channels their revolt into a military framework, thus making it controllable and negotiable in high places. EZLN is a factor of social pacification in Chiapas today and its leaders do not hesitate to point this out. Unfortunately, in Chiapas we are far from seeing the beginnings of a transformation of social relations, let alone a subversion of capitalist relations.

Botanical Preservation Corps New
New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Independent Pacific Northwest Booksellers! 37 p. stapled pamphlet This manual is a training guide in practical field techniques for collecting, documenting, processing and shipping seeds, plants, propagules and dried voucher specimens of tropical plants for preservation in botanical gardens and herbarium archives worldwide. Designed as a stand-alone manual for anyone interested in learning how to do field collecting. Surprisingly, there really aren't any such manuals available and we had to write this one in order to provide Botanical Preservation Corps volunteers with the necessary guidance and skills. This manual is still in a draft form and is being worked up for future publication. Meanwhile it has served many people and has been given good comments from many amateur as well as professional botanists. Here is what Richard Evans Schultes had to say: "need for a good collecting manual for plant specimens is urgent, especially with the many non-botanists who are anxious to collect specimens. This urgency is the result of environmental conservation efforts, the greatly increased interest for plant analyses by pharmaceutical organizations looking for new medicinal compounds and growing emphasis in our schools on natural history. This collecting manual should be widely available because of the need and because of the extremely high quality of the publication. We all must congratulate and thank Botanical Preservation Corps for the time and effort to create this document. "-Richard Evans Schultes PhD, FMLS.

93 From Reform to Revolution by Martin, Ian
Martin, Ian Zabalaza Books New
This work by Ian Martin takes on the dichotomy between "reform" and "revolution," and makes a case for certain contexts of anarchists working within so-called "reform" movements: when one can be a conduit to "revolutionary" change. "Reformist!? What a dreaded word for any self-professed revolutionary to be attached to. It is one of those accusatory labels that ends intelligent debate and is designed to intimidate one into silence. Much like the labels of communist! or, more recently, terrorist! used by those in power and their propagandists. These labels serve as ideological whips to force someone into the proper mindset; god forbid someone does not spout the proper theories or rhetoric. It is amazing how much activity is considered reformist by some, leaving one to wonder exactly what can be done that is considered revolutionary besides running around with gun and bomb in hand, attending meetings with the necessary scowl, or dancing around a campfire. Reformist vs. revolutionary. The eternal debate. And while we stand around fighting over which actions are which, we accomplish no action, and the world goes to hell.

46 Burn Collector: Collected Stories from One through Nine
Burian, Al PM Press 1604862203 / 9781604862201 PAPERBACK New
1604862203 Burn Collector compiles the first nine issues of Al Burian?s sporadically published and widely acclaimed personal zine. Beginning in the mid-nineties, Burian distributed his work through the tight-knit network of the DIY punk music scene. Burn Collector caught on because of its unusual content?in a scene rife with dogmatic political diatribes and bland record reviews, Burian presented his readers with humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings, nuanced descriptions of odd locales and curious characters, taken mostly from outside of the punk milieu?and also because of the author?s narrative voice, which reflected the literary influences of Celine, Henry Miller, or even David Sedaris more than the influence of his contemporaries in the zine world. writing in Burn Collector blueprinted a post-punk persona that was smart, strange, political but not correct, attached to subculture, but striving also for a connection to the world at large, and to the greater themes of human existence. book went through six printings, along the way garnering acclaim from readers, inspiring a film (Matt McCormick?s 2009, Some Days are Better than Others) and a major label album (Thrice?s 2003, Artist in the Ambulance). More importantly, the book inspired readers to write and self-publish: to do it themselves, in the true punk spirit.
